Prepare list of GST defaulters with action taken, Tax Deptt told by UT Administration

A day after e-way bill generation of 1,026 firms was blocked for not filing GST returns for December 2019 and January 2020 on time, the UT administration on Friday asked the excise and taxation department to submit a report on tax defaulters.

A senior UT official said department was told prepare a list of defaulters, action initiated against them, like blocking e-way bill generation and submit a report. The idea is to keep a check on revenue generation and defaulters, he added.

Sources said many of these firms approached the administration on Friday. In the absence of e-way bill generation, they would not be able to transport their goods from one place to another.

The e-way bill is an electronically generated document mandatory to be carried for movement of goods across India and within the city. It is necessary for the movement of goods worth more than Rs 50,000 with some exceptions.

Sources said directions have been issued to all officials of the excise and taxation department to strictly enforce the Centre’s instructions in their respective wards against tax defaulters.

In Chandigarh there are around 29,000 GST registered dealers. Besides, the officials were also asked to submit progress report on GST collection in their respective wards.

In a recently released report, the figures of GST collection in Chandigarh continued to dip in September as well, standing at Rs 141 crore.
