Highlights of Statistical Report issued by GSTN on completion of 3 years of GST implementation

The Goods and Service Tax Network (GSTN) has released a Statistical Report on Completion of 3 years of GST.

Contents and Highlights of the Report

The report covers the following key areas / statistics:

  • Registration trend (active tax payers net of cancellations) from April 2018 to June 2020: The figure as on 30.04.2018 being 1.09 cr which was increased to 1.23 Cr as on 30.06.2020.
  • Break up of active taxpayers as on June 30, 2020: Out of 1.23 Cr tax payers 1.03 Cr are normal tax payers and 0.17 Cr are composition tax payers.
  • Month-wise returns filed since July 2017; GSTR-1 return filing trend from July 2017 to May 2020; GSTR-3B filing compliance as on June 30, 2020: It has been stated in report that over 47 crore returns have been filed till June,2020 and highest returns filed in a day was 23.86 lakhs.
  • Invoice Count as per Turnover Slab (at GSTIN level): It has been stated in the report that average count of invoices per month per tax payer is 25.19.
  • Payments from April 2018 to March 2019 and from April 2019 to March 2020: Total payments in FY 2018-19 being Rs 11,77,369 Cr and in FY 2019-20 being Rs 12,22,118 Cr.
  • Contribution to GST Revenue from different Constitutions of Business: The major chunk of 35.29% of GST revenue coming from public limited companies and 27.51% from private limited companies. Thus around 63% of total GST revenue is contributed by Companies.
  • Data Transmission to Customs for Refund of IGST Paid on Export of Goods from June 2019 till June 2020 and Online Refund Status as on June 30, 2020:It states that for period post 26th Sep,2019 after online refund was launched 1,70,397 payment orders of refund of Rs 45,173 Cr has been issued in RFD-05 out of which refund of Rs 42860.57 Cr has been disbursed by PFMS.
  • E-way bill Statistics / generation from April 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020: Total e-Way bills generated 70.63 Cr. Highest e-Way bill generated in a day were 25,19,208/-
  • Modes of E-way Bill Generation: The report states that out of tortal e_way bills generated 61.74% were generated through website, 21.55% through excel tool and 16.70% by Mobile, SMS & API. Also in 99.63% cases the mode of goods transport was by Road.
  • E-way bill Statistics during COVID-19 Pandemic:Reduction in e-Way bills generated in April, 2020 to 3,90,980 and in May to 8,98,714 as against monthly quantum of around 15 lakhs in pre COVID era. However upward Movement in E-way Bill Generation was witnessed from 3rd week of April.

The report further highlighted the GSTN Outreach Initiatives which included Tax Officials and Stakeholders Training during 2019-20 and GSTNs YouTube Channel 2017-2020.

The GSTN introduced a GST Interactive Technical Assistant named Chatbot on 26th June 2020. GITA is loaded with pre-drafted responses to the queries asked by taxpayers on common topics, such as- Payment, E-way bill, Registration, Refunds, and Returns, etc. The Chatbot works on Artificial Intelligence (AI) based technology. This 24×7 facility is available on the GST portal for mobile users too.

The report further included the Social Media Statistics; Services like helpdesk; Number of Officers Using GST Back Office; Taxpayer Helpdesk; and Taxpayer Assistance.
